They failed to understand that God's grace is not dependent on the things we do because we can't do anything good enough to achieve God's standard of righteousness. They carried an air of being "holier than thou" and not wanting to associate with "sinners," even though they, themselves were sinners. They tried to be righteous by their outward deeds, but <a href="http://carlswordsofinspiration.blogspot.com/2011/09/extreme-makeover-heart-edition.html" rel="nofollow">God looks at the heart</a>.
